The first misconception is that you can simply clear the check engine light and everything will be fine.
Technically… yes, the light can be cleared.
But that’s a little like taking the batteries out of your smoke detector because it’s making noise. The warning goes away, but the problem hasn’t.
In most cases, the light will come back anywhere from a few minutes to a few days later because the original fault is still present.
If you’re hoping to clear the light before taking your vehicle to an Albuquerque emissions station, that won’t work either. Modern Ford vehicles continuously run what are called readiness monitors.
